Stock Market Blog -Dec 28th

This was another good week for the markets. The Russell 2000 (small-caps) closed at an all time high, and looks poised to move even higher! The S&P500 and the DOW also closed at an all time high. The NASDAQ needs to catch up and probably will. Also the S&P500 will probably take out the 2100 level, since its so close -all short term bullish signs.  We also got a great GDP report revision (5%).

Stock Market Blog -Dec 21st

The market rallied strong after the Fed meeting on Wednesday, catching most people by surprise. We could see this rally continue to finish off the year, and as 'short' positions are covered. Next week could be a light trading week because of the Christmas holiday.

There are still good trading opportunities using Options, because Implied Volatility is still somewhat elevated. Credit Spreads and Iron Condors would be appropriate trades.

Stock Market Blog -Dec 14th

Bad week in the markets, both for stocks and Oil.  Bonds surged, sending interest rates lower.

Outlook: The market broke for the first time since the mid-October rally. It's pretty much at a support level here so we could see a bounce next week, especially since its expiration week which tends to have a bullish bias. Using Options, opportunities might exist in selling high volatility puts or put spreads.

Another week, another new high in the markets! We also got a good Monthly Jobs report on Friday, with over 300,000 new jobs added. Cyber Monday sales were up, and Oil prices continued to drop.

This marks 7 straight weeks of gains in the market! Is it time to take profits yet?? I think we'll see the NASDAQ return to its 2000 highs before we see a meaningful pullback . We're pretty close, 14 years later!

Newsflash! Yeaaay... we are now more than $18,000,000,000,000 in debt ($18 trillion)

Stock Market Weekend Update -Nov 23rd

Another week, another record high in the markets (S&P500) -we have had a non-stop rally since mid-October! Lots of new all-time highs (below). We'll see what next week brings, but odds favor a pullback in the near future. Bonds have been holding up in spite of the stock rally. Gold continued to recover, in spite of a continued rally in the US Dollar.

The short-term trend is still 'up', so no reason to really be bearish until we see a change in this short-term trend.  Next week is a short trading week because of Thanksgiving.

Stock Market Blog -Nov 16th

The market was pretty much flat all week, though AAPL and AMZN rallied. Gold also rallied, while Oil dropped. The equity market may be getting tired here after this monster rally for the past month. We get earnings from a couple of retailers this week.

Implied Volatility in BABA is still high, so selling Credit Spread options might make sense here, in anticipation of a drop in IV.

Stock Market Blog -Oct 26th

We got a big bounce this week in spite of some earnings disappointments (Nasdaq was up more than 5%!). Next week we have a Fed meeting, along with more earnings reports. We've seen gas prices drop, and mortgage rates come down as well.

The market rose sharply this week, so it's reasonable to expect a pause or pullback in the next week -catalysts could be the Fed meeting, earnings, or some unexpected news event like Europe or ebola...

Stock Market Blog -Oct 19th

We saw a steep sell-off this week, with a small recovery toward the end of the week. The indexes have now crossed below the 200MA. The Bond market saw some volatility too as it spiked on Wednesday. Oil prices continued downward, while Gold was up a bit. Financial troubles in Europe seem to be stirring up again.

The S&P500 is obviously in a short term down-trend. We could see it bounce a little higher this week (maybe resistance around 1920), but that will probably be followed by a continuation of the down-trend. Earnings reports could be a catalyst for providing short term market direction, and this week we get lots of companies reporting -AAPL reports on Monday.

You can trade the Bond market using TLT or TBT, or OIL using USO, or Gold using GLD. For the overall market you can use SPY, QQQ, IWM, or for the down-side, SH, PSQ, or RWM.

Stock Market Blog -Oct 12th

The market continued to sell off this week, with large swings in both directions. Maybe we'll see a double bottom in the S&P500, and get a bounce next week, as we approach October Options expiration on Friday, and also approach a support level from the drop we saw in August. Earnings season begins next week, so we could see some added volatility.

Options Implied Volatility is at an elevated level, which presents an opportunity to sell premium.

Stock Market Blog -Oct 5th

The market saw a big drop on Wednesday, then reversed on Thursday & Friday with a big rally, but ended the week lower! The unemployment rate dropped to 5.9% -not sure how meaningful that is though, because of the way it's calculated, and a lack of wage growth, and the continued weak participation rate.  Looking at the chart of the S&P500, the recent downtrend is still intact -we closed below the 50MA this week too.

The US Dollar continued to rocket higher, sending Gold lower still. Oil was down as well.

Stock Market Blog -Sep 28th

We saw some rocky action this week with a big drop on Thursday, and some recovery on Friday. Looks like we're maybe setting up for a pullback. Next week marks the end of the 3rd quarter, and the following month marks the beginning of earnings season again. Get ready for some volatility.

Commodities continue to get hammered, as the US Dollar keeps rising. We could see Gold under $1200 next week, and Oil under $90. An oversupply of Grains is sending prices lower too (charts below).

The market roller coaster continues, with an 'up' leg this week. No real effects from the Fed, the Scotland vote, or triple witch Options expiration. We are approaching the end of the quarter and I expect the rally will hold up through that time.

Stock Market Blog -Sep 14th

We saw some weakness in the market, indicating maybe that the rally may be starting to run out of steam. Remember that next Friday is triple witching Options expiration for the month and the quarter -the market typically will hold up for this event though. Keep an eye out for the reaction to the Fed announcement on Wednesday too.

The energy sector (XLE) has been dropping as Oil prices continue to fall. The IYR Real Estate ETF saw a drop this week too. Ditto for Bond prices and Gold. Some of these drops are a consequence of the continued rise in the US Dollar.

AAPL finally announced their new iPhones and watch, with little reaction from the stock price.
